How the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax works

Under 55,000 lbs

No HVUT is owed. You only file if the vehicle is otherwise taxable.

55,000 lbs

$100 (or $75 for a logging vehicle).

55,001 – 75,000 lbs

$100 plus $22 for each additional 1,000 lbs over 55,000 ($16.50 for logging).

Over 75,000 lbs

Maximum $550 ($412.50 for a logging vehicle).

New vehicles are taxed only for the months remaining in the period — the calculator prorates this from your first-use month.

Form 2290 — FAQ

How is the tax calculated?

$100 at 55,000 lbs, plus $22 per 1,000 lbs over 55,000, capped at $550 over 75,000 lbs. Logging vehicles pay $75 / $16.50 / $412.50.

What's the taxable gross weight?

The unloaded weight of the truck and trailer plus the maximum load usually carried. HVUT applies at 55,000 lbs and up.

When is it due?

By August 31 for vehicles in use at the start of the July–June period; for new vehicles, the last day of the month after first use (prorated).

Do low-mileage trucks pay?

No — a vehicle driven 5,000 miles or less (7,500 agricultural) is suspended: you file Form 2290 but owe no tax.

Estimate only, based on the published IRS Form 2290 rate structure. Confirm your exact tax and file with the IRS or a provider. TRUCKSSISTANCE is not affiliated with the IRS or FMCSA.
