What is the MCS-150 biennial update?

The MCS-150 (Motor Carrier Identification Report) is the record that keeps your USDOT number active. Every carrier must refresh it on a fixed 24-month cycle — even if nothing has changed — and within 30 days of any change to your address, fleet size, company name or operation.

Every 24 months

Your biennial update is due in an assigned month and year, based on your USDOT number — regardless of when you last filed.

Within 30 days of a change

Moved, added trucks, changed your name or MCS-150 mileage? File an update within 30 days.

Keeps you active

Skip it and FMCSA deactivates your USDOT — which can stop your operation and block new authority.

It's free to file

The update itself costs nothing with FMCSA. The cost of missing it is far higher.

The FMCSA schedule rule

FMCSA sets your deadline from two digits of your USDOT number:

Next-to-last digit → month

1 → January6 → June
2 → February7 → July
3 → March8 → August
4 → April9 → September
5 → May0 → October

Last digit → year

Odd last digitodd-numbered years
Even last digiteven-numbered years

Example: USDOT 3938201 → next-to-last digit 0 = October, last digit 1 = odd years, so it's due in October of each odd year.

MCS-150 — FAQ

How often must I update it?

Every 24 months, even with no changes, plus within 30 days of any change to your carrier information.

Which month is mine due?

The next-to-last digit of your USDOT number sets the month (1=January … 9=September, 0=October); the last digit sets the year (odd digit = odd years, even = even years).

What if I miss it?

FMCSA deactivates your USDOT number. Operating inactive can bring fines and out-of-service orders and can block new authority.

Does it cost anything?

No — filing the biennial update with FMCSA is free.
